What is effective public speaking and why is it important?
Many nonprofit organizations face unique challenges; often times organizations must seek financial contributions from their target audience, speak at public rallies or persuade political figures to support their cause. Being a strong, persuasive and informed speaker draws your audience in and gives them confidence in you and your cause.
Leaders of a nonprofit organization must be able to verbally communicate effectively to their audience; be it a charity event, public hearing, community meeting or any other event. To be an effective speaker, one must not only have a specific purpose but be able to successfully attain it. If, for example, you are presenting a speech to your state representatives with the purpose of expressing the importance of funding for the improvement of literary achievement among middle school students; your audience must leave the meeting with a clear sense of the facts.
Many times a speaker must persuade his or her audience to act; sometimes the goal is to persuade the audience to make financial contributions to a specific cause or organization, or to support the passing of a law or to take action in some other way. In order to be effective in this case, one must not only achieve their audience’s understanding but persuade their audience as well.
Presentations are another area where effective speaking is necessary. A skilled speaker will know how to make the best out of his or her time by coordinating the speech with the presentation materials. When using presentation materials, they should be as effective as the speaker; clear, concise and visually appealing.
